Drunk Hanley driver stopped by public pleads guilty

A motorist stopped by members of the public after driving erratically while under the influence of alcohol has pleaded guilty in court.

Staffordshire Police said a breath test at the scene in Stoke-on-Trent showed Steve Mahon, 44, from the Hanley area of the city, was five times over the legal drink-driving limit.

Alarmed members of the public “stopped him at the scene until we got there, removing the keys from the ignition to prevent him from continuing to drive,” police said.

At North Staffordshire Justice Centre, Mahon pleaded guilty to driving while his alcohol level was above the legal limit.

Constable Andrew Hurd, from the police’s road crime team, said: “I would like to thank the members of the public who recognized the danger of Mahon’s actions and managed to stop him from harming himself and other road users.”

Mahon took offense while driving a Suzuki Swift on Potteries Way in Hanley on October 22 and pleaded guilty the next day.

He is due to be sentenced on January 27.

Police said Mahon measured 180 micrograms of alcohol in 100 milliliters of breath at the scene. The legal limit is 35 micrograms of alcohol.

He was tested again while in custody, police added, and the result was 165 micrograms, still more than four times the normal limit.
