World Test Championship 2023-2025: Points Table, India vs Australia WTC Scenarios and Final Date

World Test Championship 2023-2025: Points Table, India vs Australia WTC Scenarios and Final Date

India

While India remain in the lead, two home defeats to New Zealand have made it much harder for Rohit Sharma’s men to reach a third straight WTC final.

However, it is still in their hands and a win in the third Test over the Black Caps, combined with a win in the three Tests in Australia, would guarantee them a place in next summer’s exhibition game.

Australia

After India’s misses against New Zealand, the equation for Australia is quite simple: win five of their last seven matches and they head to Lord’s for the chance to defend their title.

Four wins – if three of them are against India – should be enough, but if less than five, then other results become the deciding factor.

Sri Lanka

As with Australia, this is a fairly simple scenario for Sri Lanka. Win all four remaining matches in the cycle and they will advance to the finals.

It won’t be easy against fellow opponents South Africa and Australia, but three wins and a loss could be enough depending on results elsewhere.

New Zealand

India’s historic series win kept 2021 Test champions New Zealand alive with a chance to return to the finals.

Even winning all four remaining Tests – one in India and three at home in England – would not guarantee them a place in the top two, but would give them a very good chance.

South Africa

As things stand, the Proteas need five wins out of five to be fully confident of reaching the final.

Four wins and a draw will give them a good chance, but even four wins and a loss will not ruin their chances completely.

However, in both cases they will need different results to achieve their goal.

England, Pakistan, Bangladesh And West Indies no longer qualify for the finals.

But of course it’s worth noting that things could change again if any side are docked points for slowly inflating the rankings, as has happened to five teams this cycle, including England and Australia during the 2023 Ashes.
