The Fiji Competition and Consumer Commission is warning the public against potential scams associated with social media advertisements claiming to offer free online courses with certificates and the opportunity to gain high-paying jobs.

Misleading advertisements that use the Fijian government’s logo to feign legitimacy are circulating on social media platforms, enticing users to click on unverified links, potentially leading them to fraudulent sites aimed at collecting personal information for nefarious purposes.

FCCC Director General Joel Abraham urges people to remain cautious and avoid disclosing personal information to suspicious sources.

Abraham says that, as has been noted in the past, scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their ways of targeting Fijians.

He emphasizes that official information about government programs is always transmitted through trusted channels.

He adds that these online education scams are cleverly disguised to exploit Fijians looking to improve their skills.

With Diwali just around the corner, Abraham is urging Fijians to be on the lookout for scams.

He claims that this period often sees an increase in scams as scammers look to take advantage of the rush and increase in online shopping during celebrations.

He stresses that scammers may use Diwali-themed messages to hide their intentions, so Fijians should check the authenticity of all offers before interacting.
