Wicked’s Cynthia Erivo shared her thoughts on the “haters” who don’t like musicals (and made a good point)

Broadway stage musicals are an institution, and it has become commonplace for film musicals to adapt this material for film. I never understand when (music haters) ask, “Why do people sing randomly?” Because people sing every day, randomly, in the middle of the street! They literally do! I sat in cars and people just sang along to the songs! Or the number of times people behave passive-aggressively: when something happens that they don’t like, instead of asking, “What’s going on?”, they sing about what’s happening. Or at football stadiums suddenly everyone sings along in unison – that’s how they sing in real life!

The points have been made. Music is a huge part of many people’s lives and spans years, genres and tons of money. Many of us sing in the car and in the shower, and Cynthia Erivo doesn’t seem to think it’s much different from singing our favorite songs from Wicked. And that’s not even taking into account other activities like karaoke or singing along at concerts.

Although some musicals have tried to hide the fact that they will feature musical numbers during their run, Wickedtrailer put singing in the foreground. Although there has been some controversy over will there be two films or not?. In the same interview, Erivo explained what makes musicals so special, offering:

There is something special about the musical. Essentially, it becomes a spectacle, whether you like it or not. I think we don’t pay enough attention to the audience when it comes to musicals, so we pretend that musicals aren’t musicals. And now I think it’s okay to just say, “Hey, it’s a musical, come and see it, you’ll survive… and you might even like it!”

The points have been made. And considering she’s a Tony Award-winning actress, Cynthia Erivo knows what she’s talking about. It’s like Wicked There’s a lot of hype surrounding it ahead of its release in November. Let’s hope this translates into strong box office returns, especially since the second film is coming out a year later.
