Crews prevailed in battling a large grass fire south of Valley Center.

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Update: Fifteen units representing five agencies, including the Wichita Fire Department and Sedgwick County Fire District 1, were able to protect homes from a large grass fire near North 53rd and Meridian.

Just before 6 p.m., Sedgwick County Fire Chief Brad Crisp said crews were making progress in containing the fire, keeping it mostly under control. There were initial fears that the fire could spread to houses, but residents did not have to evacuate.

Crisp said 50 to 70 acres burned. As of Monday evening, Crisp said it was unknown what caused the fire, but it was believed to be accidental.

Update: Sedgwick County Emergency Management said evacuations were canceled in the area of ​​53rd and High streets, near Meridian, north of Wichita.

Emergency Management said crews thought they might have to evacuate homes in the area because of the grass fire, but so far they have been able to keep the structures safe without the evacuation process.
