WATERFORD. CT (WFSB) – Crews rescued a 46-year-old woman from her car Monday evening after it crashed into the Niantic River.

Waterford Emergency Communications Center received a call regarding the incident at 8:03 p.m.

The initial investigation revealed that the woman was driving a 2010 Dodge Nitro westbound on Daniels Avenue when she lost control, causing the vehicle to cross a guardrail and fall into the water.

The driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Good Samaritans, as well as police and firefighters, assisted in the rescue.

The accident happened right outside the home of the husband and wife, who rushed to help.

William Leschi, one of the Samaritans, recounted the harrowing experience: “I just jumped into the water and these two ladies followed me and we got as close to it as we could. We saw that she was conscious. We tried to talk to her and console her. “I unbuckled her seat belt and we got her to safety.”

The group moved more than a hundred feet from shore to reach the woman, who turned out to be a family friend.

“I’ve never seen anything like this in my entire life, so it was right next to our house… and we knew her, which was even worse,” Juliette Lesky said.

The officer was also taken to the hospital as a precaution.

The investigation into the incident continues.
