A 50-year-old woman who went missing for two days while hiking has been rescued, officials say.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. (Gray News) – Authorities in California said they were able to find and rescue a 50-year-old hiker who had been missing for nearly two days.

According to release San Diego County Sheriff’s Office volunteers found the woman in a remote area of San Diego County early Sunday morning after several hours of searching.

Sheriff’s deputies with the Rural Law Enforcement Division said they received a call from the woman’s family Saturday afternoon. The family said they haven’t heard from the woman since she texted them around 8:30 a.m. Friday.

The woman reportedly told them she was going to go camping near the Lake Morena campground in Campo.

During the investigation, deputies said San Diego County Parks and Recreation officials told them the woman had missed checkout time at her cabin near the lake.

Park officials also said her belongings were still in the cabin. Her car was found near the trailhead a short time later.

Search and rescue volunteers were called to the area to help search for the woman, while a helicopter searched from above.

Park staff searched the trails in an off-road vehicle, and a two-person team with a search and rescue dog was also deployed.

Just before 10 p.m. Saturday, search and rescue volunteers spotted what they believed to be the woman’s shoe prints on the trail and began following them.

During the search, volunteers shouted the woman’s name, hoping to hear an answer.

That response came just after 4 a.m. Sunday. Volunteers heard the woman’s answering scream and eventually found her in a steep and rocky area nearly 10 miles from her car just before 5 a.m.

Officials said the woman was exhausted but otherwise in good condition.

Because of the difficult terrain, volunteers stayed with the woman until a helicopter brought her to safety around 8 a.m.

She was then airlifted to the Morena Lake campground, where she received medical attention and was eventually reunited with her family.

The sheriff’s office said it wants to thank all the volunteers and agencies that helped bring the woman to safety.
