A 17kg cat in Russia dies a few weeks after attending a “fat camp”, World News

An overweight rescue cat named Kroshik in Russia died last Saturday (October 26) after veterinarians discovered cancerous tumors in his body.

Kroshik, also known as Crumbs in English, became famous in August for weighing 17kg – the weight of an average four-year-old.

The cat was placed on a diet and exercise regimen at an animal shelter in Perm, a city near the Ural Mountains, and went viral again for trying to escape from a “fat camp.”

The Matroskin shelter, where Kroshik was being rehabilitated, shared the news of the cat’s death on social networks.

“Kroshik (Krashki) passed away last night. This news resonates with a ringing emptiness in the heart.”

The owner of the shelter, Galiana More, said that Kroshik has no external signs of illness.

Last Saturday the cat began to have difficulty breathing and was placed in an oxygen chamber. Despite all the efforts of the staff, Kroshik died two hours later.

Kroshik’s official cause of death is still unknown, but veterinarians at the cat shelter found tumors in his lungs and spleen that they believe caused multiple organ collapse.

The cat was allegedly rescued from the basement of a hospital in Perm, where he was constantly fed crackers and soup, which led to excessive weight gain.

During his stay at the Matroskin shelter, Kroshik managed to lose three kilos thanks to an intensive diet and exercise regimen.

He was even able to jump onto low sofas and cushions, which was a big improvement from when he was rescued and was completely unable to walk.

Mourning the death of the cat, the shelter said: “This is a great loss for us, because Kroshik was a symbol of hope for everyone.”
