Meta is building an AI-powered search engine – could it be the real Google rival we’ve been waiting for?

Meta is developing an artificial intelligence search engine that will replace Google And Microsoft in Meta AI. The search engine will return Meta AI chatbot answers without the need for an external source.

Information reports: “Meta hopes to reduce its dependence on Google Search and Microsoft Bingwhich currently provide information about news, sports and stocks to people using Meta AI, according to a person who spoke with the search engine team.”

This news came from the other side Meta AI’s new partnership with Reuters which allows users to get answers about news and current events from the latest Reuters reporting without leaving Facebook, Instagram or whatsapp.

Meta wants Meta AI to be self-sufficient, without having to rely on other technologies to provide the best user experience. Developing a search engine based on artificial intelligence would be a huge step in this direction.

The information says a Meta spokesperson declined to comment, but given that Meta AI has over 185 million weekly users, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Meta redouble its efforts to use its proprietary technology to keep all that search traffic in-house.

Revolution in AI search

Artificial intelligence search engines are growing in popularity with options like Perplexity and Arc Search proving to be incredibly useful tools for searching the web. AI search engines differ from regular Google search in that they create summaries based on search results and provide the end user with links to primary sources for further research if they require it.

If Meta does develop an AI search engine, we could see a true competitor to Google’s own search as large companies begin to move into the AI search engine space. OpenAI‘s SearchGPT rumored to be out before the end of the year, we now wonder if we could see a Meta alternative before 2025?
