Kids can “vote” now until Election Day at the YMCA

PHOENIX — Election Day is just a week away, and while millions of adults head to the polls, kids also have a chance to take part in the democratic process.

Mock-up polling places have been created at Valley of the Sun YMCA locations throughout Maricopa County. Children can fill out a ballot that includes familiar faces, such as candidates for President and U.S. Senate. When they finish, they will receive an “I Voted” sticker.

Seventeen-year-old Owen Sutton filled out his “ballot” on Monday. He is involved in the YMCA’s Youth and Government program, where children can learn about civic engagement.

“We are the generation that will be most impacted by the votes cast in this election, so once we vote, we are responsible for determining our future,” Sutton said.

“Youth & Government’s motto is that democracy should be learned by every generation,” said Deputy Executive Director for Civic Engagement Elise Nilles. “So teaching these youth these practical skills is very important to ensure that they become active and engaged citizens later in life.”

If your child is interested in joining the Youth and Government program, there is still time to register. You can Click here to find out more.

“The current political climate is very divisive, and I think our politicians are not setting the best example for young people. But as young people, we are very capable of setting that example for ourselves, and I think programs like this teach us to embrace leadership as our own role and become the leaders we want to see in the world,” Sutton added.

On Election Day, Nov. 5, the YMCA will also provide free child care so adults can go vote.
