Tompkins County Launches Initiative to Provide Free Induction Cooktops to Reduce Gas Stove Emissions

Tompkins County has announced a new initiative offering free induction cooktops and compatible cookware to residents with gas stoves in an effort to reduce indoor air pollution and reduce fossil fuel use. The program is part of the county’s Healthy Neighborhoods program, a federally funded initiative to address housing-related health issues in collaboration with the Department of Planning and Sustainability and Whole Health of Tompkins County.

To be eligible, residents must apply for a home visit through the Healthy Neighborhoods program. During these visits, staff will educate participants on how to manage various health hazards in their homes. It’s important to note that recipients do not need to replace or discard their existing gas stoves to receive the new equipment.

Funded by the New York City Clean Energy Communities Program, the initiative highlights the efficiency of induction cookers and the reduced health risks compared to gas cooktops. Interested residents can contact the Healthy Neighborhoods program for more information on planning a visit.
