Five hunters trapped in wildfires have been rescued in Osage County.

READING, Kan. (KSNW) – Five hunters have been rescued after becoming trapped by wildfires in Osage County.

Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks hunters said it happened Sunday at Melvern Wildlife Sanctuary near Reading. Osage County Game Warden Tanner Hawk and K9 Rip were in the area assisting with search and rescue efforts.

K9 Rip found traces of two groups of hunters trapped in two large fires. They were able to get five hunters and one black lab hunting dog to safety.

A vehicle that was in the path of the fire was also transported safely. The cause of the fire is being investigated by the superintendent and public lands manager.

Anyone who was in the area and may have witnessed anything suspicious is asked to call Game Warden Hawk. 620-450-7264.
