A jury rejected a New Jersey man’s insanity defense and found him guilty of beating his mother to death.

The man was convicted of beat his 70-year-old mother to death after the jury rejected his insanity defense at his trial.

Benjamin Avrut, 38, was found guilty of first-degree murder when jurors returned their verdict Oct. 18, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said Tuesday. The discussions lasted about a day and a half.

Prosecutors say he entered his mother’s apartment on the night of Jan. 4, 2021, and struck her in a series of blows.

When police arrived at the luxury apartment located on South Orange Avenue in Maplewood, Avrut’s mother, Gwen Avrut, did not respond. She was pronounced dead about 30 minutes later, officials said.

Authorities also accused Avrut of an elaborate cover-up to make it appear that his mother had attacked him and then committed suicide. This included a text message sent from Gwen’s phone to another of her children, alleging that she had assaulted her son. Prosecutors argued that Benjamin sent the text.

Prosecutors also suggested that Benjamin had a history of drug and gambling abuse and that he killed his mother for a $9 million inheritance.

His sentencing is scheduled for December 13.
