Carabao Cup: Brentford 1-1 Sheff Wednesday (5-4 on penalties) – The Bees advance to quarter-finals

Brentford needed penalties to reach the quarter-finals of the League Cup on Tuesday after drawing 1-1 with Sheffield Wednesday.

The Premier League side dominated for most of the match and took an early lead through Kevin Schade, albeit in fortuitous circumstances.

The German striker’s initial shot was saved by Piers Charles, but the ball bounced back into his path off Gabriel Otegbayo for him to tap into the empty net.

Brentford continued to defend on Wednesday and 19-year-old Charles was called into action to deny Keane Lewis-Potter and Brian Mbeumo.

Wednesday’s much-changed side managed just one touch inside Brentford’s box in the first half, but Jady Gassama leveled Danny Rol’s side with a superb strike from 25 yards shortly after the break.

The goal livened up the match, with Ike Ugbo and Liam Palmer testing Flekken in quick succession before Mbeumo stung the palms of Charles.

Both sides went for the winner and brought regulars off the bench, but neither could find the breakthrough needed to avoid a penalty shoot-out.

The first nine penalties of the shootout were scored before Mark Flekken saved Palmer’s shot to give Brentford the win.

Brentford are in the last eight for the first time since the 2021-22 season and will look to repeat their semi-final result of 20-21.

The quarter-final draw will take place following the conclusion of the Round of 16 clash between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City on Wednesday.

The quarter-final matches are scheduled to take place in the week commencing 16 December.
