Latest US election: Harris warns election is a choice between ‘a country built on freedom or chaos’ as it tries to make a name for itself with voters | US News

Elections are a choice between “a country rooted in freedom or a country ruled by chaos,” Harris says

Kamala Harris begins her attack speech by warning voters that the election is a choice between “a country founded on freedom for every American, or a country ruled by chaos and division.”

While she notes the fact that many people (an estimated 51 million) have already voted, she says she knows others are “still figuring out who to vote for.”

“I will be talking to everyone about the choices and stakes in this election,” she says.

Harris’ campaign estimated that more than 75,000 people attended the Democratic nominee’s speech.

Harris takes aim at Trump on January 6

She’s speaking from the Ellipse outside the White House, the site where Donald Trump appeared in January 2021 to promote false claims that the presidential election was stolen.

Ms Harris says: “We know who Donald Trump is – the man who stood in this very spot almost four years ago and sent an armed mob to the United States Capitol to overturn the will of the people in a free and fair election.”

She says the country is “consumed by too much division, chaos and mutual mistrust” but it doesn’t have to be that way.

“We have to stop pointing fingers and start clasping hands,” she adds.

“It’s time to turn the page on drama and conflict.”

At one point she calls him a “petty tyrant” and a “wannabe dictator.”

Harris admits people are still ‘getting to know’ her

Ms Harris also takes time to acknowledge that this was not a “typical campaign” for the White House and that many people “still recognize” her.

She explains her experience as a prosecutor by saying that she has always had a “protective instinct.”

“There’s something about treating people unfairly… it honestly just gets to me, I don’t like it,” she adds.

Trump will have an “enemies list” and Harris will have a “to-do list”

In her latest call for support, Ms Harris says she will always listen to people – even those who don’t vote for her.

“I will work every day to build consensus and compromise to get things done,” she adds.

She warns that if Trump is elected, he will enter the White House with an “enemies list” and she will enter with a “to-do list full of priorities.”

“My presidency will be different because the challenges we face are different,” she adds, saying the “biggest challenge” now is to cut costs.

Tax cuts, domestic help and immigration

She promises to cut taxes for working people and the middle class, saying she believes in the “dignity of work.”

It is also renewing its promise to offer first-time home buyers help with deposits and build affordable housing.

On immigration, Ms Harris says she will “quickly expel” people who enter the country illegally.

“Politicians need to stop treating immigration as an issue that will scare votes and instead treat it as a serious challenge,” she adds.

“I’m not looking to score political points, I’m looking for progress.

“Unlike Donald Trump, I don’t believe that people who disagree with me are enemies. He wants to put them in jail, I’ll give them a seat at the table.”

She ends her speech by saying, “Each of you has the right to turn the page and begin to write the next chapter of the most extraordinary story ever told.”
