CCSD could choose a new trustee for District B at Wednesday’s meeting.

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — The Clark County School District Board of Trustees can select a new trustee to serve and represent the community in District B during a special school board meeting Wednesday.

Board members will interview 10 candidates seeking the former position. Trustee Katie Williamsa position that has been vacant since September 11th.

Williams resigned after the Clark County District Attorney’s Office determined she did not live in the Valley.

State law requires trustees to live in the community they represent.

District Attorney Steve Wolfson told Channel 13 that police have received ample evidence that Williams’ current legal residence is in Nebraska.

“We’re very confident that she moved there, got a job there and had her baby there,” Wolfson said. “By the law and the criteria we have to look at, we believe she is no longer living in her area.”

Williams said prosecutors “broke the law” and said she is and was a resident of Nevada.

“It’s a joke, right? It really doesn’t make sense to me why anyone would want to take a position if they don’t live in the area. I understand that maybe you may have an attachment to the area, but you really can’t do your job fully if you’re not immersed in the community,” said a CCSD parent.

Although the candidate selected to replace Williams will only serve for about two months, he will play a critical role in any decisions made at the remaining school board meetings. A new trustee will likely help overcome any 3-3 votes on the board.

According to documents posted on the CCSD website, at least eight of the 10 candidates who applied for the position have some degree in education.

Channel 13 spoke to parents in District B about what they would like from the next leader.

“Definitely honesty. Living in this area would be phenomenal. Probably the opportunity to push the envelope and maybe open things up to new things, new processes, programs, the opportunity to go to maybe other school systems and see that maybe it would be a little better to do it and implement it locally.” , said the parent.

The meeting will be held at the CCSD Education Center at 9:30 am.
