Jurgen Klopp, the German head coach who covered the Premier League for nine years at Liverpool, stepped down from his managerial role and joined Red Bull as global head of football in October.

Many doubted his decision because Red Bull’s biggest football club is RB Leipzig, rivals of Borussia Dortmund, the team where Klopp has developed into a world-class coach.

“I didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes, absolutely not. And I love all my former clubs, but I don’t know what I could do to make everyone happy.

“It was always clear to me, well, clear that I would not do anything. And then the Red Bull story came up. And it was an outstanding option and I have to be honest about that,” Klopp said on Toni Kroos’ podcast “Einfach mal Luppen”.

Jurgen Klopp has been appointed head of football at Red Bull, his first appointment since stepping down after successfully leading Premier League giants Liverpool. Klopp, who ends his successful nine-year tenure at Liverpool after the 2023/24 Premier League season, will take up his new role on 1 January 2025.

Klopp was also head coach of Mainz for eight seasons before moving to Dortmund. When Mainz recently played RB Leipzig, the team’s ultras put up an anti-Klopp banner before the game, reading: “Have you forgotten everything we made you become?”

“I’m essentially an advisor. I hope I can reassure in different ways, and in other situations correctly assess the situation and help the coaches. But I just want to be supportive and not interfere because I know how destructive it is. Instead, I want to pass on my experience and work in the world I know best,” he added.
