‘Sing Sing’ Cast to Receive Gotham Awards for Social Justice

The Gotham Film and Media Institute announced that the cast of Sing Sing will receive a special award for Gotham’s social justice when the awards are presented on Monday, December 2, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. The film is noted for highlighting the Rehabilitation Through the Arts program at the main prison. The film’s ensemble included program alumni such as John-Adrian “JJ” Velasquezwho was recently exonerated after serving 24 years in prison.

Geoffrey Sharpexecutive director of the Gotham Film and Media Institute, said in a statement: “Sing Sing powerfully illuminates the indomitable spirit of those impacted by the systemic problems of our prison system, while demonstrating the profound transformative power of art.” Gotham is honored to present this year’s social justice tribute to such a joyful and innovative project. We look forward to celebrating the cast and team behind this remarkable film, recognizing their work as a catalyst for artistic excellence and social change.”

Director and co-writer of “Sing Sing” Greg Kvedar responded, “I am so grateful to the Gotham Film and Media Institute for honoring our film and the extraordinary group of artists who made it possible to bring this story of humanity, strength and brotherhood to the world with such elegance and vulnerability. »

Film producers Monique Walton And Clint Bentley added, “We are honored to be a part of this powerful project alongside such a dedicated cast and crew, and we are grateful to the RTA alumni for joining us and trusting us to come alongside them and help tell their stories.”

Competitive Gotham Award nominations were announced only on October 29, with “Anoraleading with four nominations: “Best Feature Film”, “Best Director” (Sean Baker), Best Performance by a Leading Role (Mikey Madison) and Best Supporting Performance (Yura Borisov). “Sing Sing” received a pair of nominations: “Best Performance by a Leading Actor” Colman Domingo and best supporting performance Clarence McLeanthe latter of whom is also a graduate of the Rehabilitation Through the Arts program. Both Domingo and McLean Oscar nomination predicted at the time of writing this article.
