No corner of the capital is complete without creepy stories of ghosts and taunting ghouls. Londoners.

But the East End is an area particularly notorious for its supernatural tales so frightening it would send a chill down anyone’s spine.

Tales of haunted woods, pubs and dimly lit streets are making Easterners think twice about wandering around Jack the Ripper’s old site.

But one cafe – just a few minutes’ walk from the foggy night streets of Whitechapel where the Ripper committed his horrific crimes – is so haunted that staff refuse to work alone.

Pret A Manger at 121 Bethnal Green Road is home to so many creepy stories that it can’t be just a coincidence.

Ginger Rivas, a 28-year-old assistant café manager, has had the bad luck of being left in fear on more than one occasion during her late shift – and is now convinced her workplace is haunted.

One dim autumn evening in 2022, Ginger remembers being scared while closing a café with a co-worker.

She said: “My colleague and I were working in the basement where the kitchen is when I noticed the CCTV screens started flashing.

“I walked into the office to take a look and my colleague burst in and asked me, ‘Did you hear that?’

“We returned to the basement and heard light footsteps upstairs – as if a woman was walking on tiptoes – but there was no one in the footage.”

If that wasn’t enough, the next evening the same thing happened.

She continued: “The next day it happened again – two days in a row!”

“The CCTV systems were moving and flashing. I didn’t want to go to the basement anymore. After that I stopped working the last shift.

“I will never close up shop again because I know what it’s like to feel like someone or something is right next to you. Especially the houses in London, many of them are old and can be haunted.”

The impressive old building used to be a carpet store that sold old clothes, and Ginger thinks the ghosts might be from the old store.

And the mysterious activity in East End Pret didn’t end there. Just last week, Ginger heard scratching on her back door as she worked in her basement office early one morning.

“It was four o’clock in the morning and I thought, ‘Again!’

“It sounded like someone was trying to break in. It was that high-pitched sound that really makes you cringe, like sharp nails on metal.

“From then on, I waited for my colleague outside to go in with him. I thought there was no way I was going in unless someone came with me,” she said.

The staff became so fed up with the paranormal activity that two years ago they brought in a Ouija board to find out what the ghosts wanted.

But unfortunately, this led to more questions than answers.

Ginger said: “It said ‘I feel a presence’ but we’re not sure what that means or why the ghost said that.”

However, Bethnal Green Pret is not the only cafe where Ginger was frightened by the unusual.

She explained: “The last Preta I worked at, not far from here, I think that place was haunted too.

“During night shifts, I worked on production with another team member and listened to music to stay awake.

“The lights started flashing in the corridor. I swear things like this keep happening to me.”

Could it be the ghosts of the Ripper’s victims taunting Ginger and her colleagues, or is it just a coincidence?

Either way, next time you decide to grab an evening beer at East End Pret, don’t stay out too late.
