‘Make it or break it’ for big-time star: Three players are key to Ten Hag’s dismissal

Ally McCoist believes this is a pivotal season for Manchester United ace Marcus Rashford, while the pundit also responded to rumors that Erik ten Hag is feeling particularly let down by Old Trafford’s three big names.

Ten Hag was sacked on Monday after the controversial 2-1 defeat at West Ham United, leaving the team. Manchester United ranks 14th in the Premier League. Ten Hag he managed to keep his job over the summer and during the last international break, but it was too many defeats.

Ruben Amorim is ready to replace the Dutchman, and the Sporting coach has agreed a contract with United.

Amorim has a huge task ahead of him to bring United within striking distance of the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal.

However, the 39-year-old will take his chances as he is one of the best young managers in the world. Amorim will also have an expensive roster at his disposal, full of stars who lost to Ten Hag but still have plenty of potential.

One way Amorim can ignite United in the table – and quickly win over the club’s fans – is to help Rashford shine again.

McCoist believes the striker needs to pull himself together and return to his scintillating form despite management rumours.

“It’s time for a change for Marcus, it really is,” he said in an interview. talkSPORT.

“You can talk about coaches coming in, be it (Jose) Mourinho, (Louis) van Gaal, Ole (Gunnar Solskjaer) or Ten Hag.

“Don’t pay attention to the coach, just go and play, go and achieve the level of play yourself. If he asks you to do a job, go do it.”

Rashford’s unpredictable form is a problem that has defined Ten Hag’s enigmatic era. He shone during the Dutchman’s first season at Old Trafford, scoring 30 goals in 56 games, but over the next two seasons he managed just 12 goals in 57 appearances.

“He (Casemiro) is a bit like (Raphael) Varane, it just didn’t work out for him.”

£86m winger AnthonyMcCoist added: “How can you (spend)… what was that? £90 million? I just don’t see it.

“It comes out on stage, you watch the guy and you want him to do well. You want him to succeed, you want him to take a little pressure off himself and succeed, but I don’t see that.”

Sources have confirmed to TEAMtalk that Anthony and Casemiro are at risk of being sold next year as Amorim does not plan to use them regularly.

Manchester United news: Ten Hag transfer misses, Phelan advice

Meanwhile, reports claim Ten Hag has missed out on some key transfer targets at United despite being backed by big spending.

He hoped for reuniting with former Ajax stars Ryan Gravenburch and Jurrien Timber at United.

However, United were unable to complete a deal for the pair, resulting in them joining Liverpool and Arsenal respectively.

Instead, Ten Hag was forced to accept the capture of Mason Mount and Lisandro Martinez.

Elsewhere, former United assistant manager Mike Phelan responded to the club’s pursuit of Amorim.

“We will find all the positives if you are successful, usually wherever they are, but the Premier League is a monster.” He said.

“It’s a completely different environment and a lot of managers found it difficult. Even the best managers found it difficult and difficult to operate in this arena.”

When asked about Amorim’s priorities at United, Phelan added: “The group of players he has and inherited is an important thing. He needs to work on them, he knows the results are not very good.

“But I also think that from the point of view of Manchester United and the manager, he has to create some kind of game, his own identity on the football field. Who are they? What kind of person are they going to be under this coach?

“It has to be a relatively immediate effect – it has to come on quickly because that’s what he’s going to be judged for quite early on. Then he will be able to build from there, if, of course, he still has money left.”
