About our average surveys

Our averages include surveys compiled by The New York Times and FiveThirtyEight. Estimates are adjusted for a variety of factors, including the newness and sample size of a poll, whether the poll represents likely voters, and whether other polls have changed since the survey was conducted.

We also assess whether each sociologist: Has a track record of accuracy in recent elections.Member of a professional electoral organizationSampling based on probability

These elements influence how much weight each survey receives on average. And we consider pollsters that meet at least two of the three criteria to be “selected pollsters” if they conduct polls for nonpartisan sponsors. Find out more about our methodology.

The Times conducts its own national and state polls in partnership with Siena College. These surveys are included in the averages. Follow the Times/Siena poll here.

Maine and Nebraska award two electoral votes to the statewide winner and one electoral vote to the winner of each congressional district. (Maine has two congressional districts, and Nebraska has three.) Historical election results for these districts are calculated based on votes cast within the district’s current boundaries.
