Tech financier’s million estate is one of San Francisco’s oldest homes

During California Gold rush, San Francisco was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake of magnitude 7.9. Now one of the oldest surviving houses to survive the 1906 disaster and subsequent fires is up for sale.

A 175-year-old Russian Hill mansion originally built in 1849 by Captain RK Ruskin is up for sale $22 million. The Victorian estate is one of four remaining heritage properties in the area and was previously the longtime residence of the late tech financier Sanford Roberston, according to the listing by Stacy Kahn and Joseph Lussier of Sotheby’s International Realty. The Silicon Valley legend famously founded the investment bank Robertson, Stephens & Company, which was later acquired by Bank of America. He also co-founded the private equity firm Francisco Partners.

As you would expect from this house, which is considered one of the oldest surviving houses in the enclave, the excavations are a mixture of old and new. Robertson’s son Brett spoke about it. Wall Street Journal that his parents commissioned interior designer Paul Wiseman and architect Sandy Walker to remodel the 8,440-square-foot abode, which included expanding the outdoor swimming pool and installing a new library. There is also a temperature-controlled wine cellar and two elevators, one of which leads to the lower level, second floor and master suite. The other is built into the hillside and takes you between the two-car garage and the main living area.

In total, the luxury complex includes five bedrooms, five full bathrooms and, most importantly, plenty of space for outdoor entertaining. The living room has a fireplace and a terrace overlooking Alcatraz. Adjacent is a formal dining room with access to a private garden terrace, while the kitchen features an indoor/outdoor breakfast area. Upstairs, the views from the master suite are just as epic, stretching from the San Francisco Bay to the Hyde Street Pier and Coit Tower. Here you will also find an office, gas fireplace, two walk-in closets and a bathroom.

Recently Bay Area was again named among most expensive postal codes in the country as deep-pocketed buyers continue to snap up iconic trophy properties. “What is happening in the market now? Of course, the homes are well priced, but also once-in-a-generation, one-of-a-kind homes,” Lussier told the publication WSJ. “This will activate the buyer pool.”
