Rufus Sewell explains this phone call

Rufus Sewell found out the finale of The Diplomat season two before anyone else.

“I thought the season one finale was a big shock. I really didn’t expect it,” he told TODAY.com. “No one could have foreseen the end of this season.”

He and co-star Keri Russell, who play a married ambassador couple forever entangled in their own brinksmanship games, were the only actors to receive a final draft of the script in advance. Other actors’ final scripts had parts edited prior to final reading.

“It was on reading day, people were getting to this page. As they turned this page, reactions could be seen appearing like a line of explosions across the reading charts. And people said: “No!” It was a very good and exciting hint of what the public reaction would be,” he says.

Although The Diplomat’s second season premiered on October 31, Sewell says he’s “stuck” on the third season, which is currently filming.

“It’s dangerous,” he says. “There are things that I can’t say that are old news to us that no one knows about yet.”

He admits that he “kind of likes” the feeling of having secrets. “Luckily, I’m so forgetful that I can’t remember much of anything,” he jokes.

In this regard, he says, he is very different from his character in The Diplomat. Hal Wyler is the husband of the US Ambassador to the UK, Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), and an ambassador himself. He is a freedom-loving foreign policy genius who knows how to deal with crooks.

“You need killers on the side of good. He’s one of those people,” Sewell says. “He says, ‘Okay, this is going to happen. I need to go here. I need to do something drastic.” Unfortunately, the consequences of this are unpredictable.”

What happens at the end of the second season of The Diplomat – and what does his character have to do with it? Read below to find out.

What will happen at the end of The Diplomat season 2?

The final moments of The Diplomat’s second season end with a shocking revelation: the President of the United States has died, apparently from the shock of a phone call with Hal.

Over the course of the season, the Wylers uncover a conspiracy about who was behind the attack on a British warship in the first season.

It turns out that Grace Penn (Allison Janney), the US Vice President, organized this with the help of former adviser to the British Prime Minister Nicola Trowbridge, Margaret “Meg” Roelin (Celia Imrie).

Grace hired a mercenary to attack a British ship to give the United Kingdom an opportunity to unite. She did this so that Scotland would not vote for independence and the US could retain control of the military base in Scotland. No one should have been hurt, but there was a malfunction they couldn’t predict, resulting in people being trapped where the missile hit, Trowbridge explained.

Kate and Hal discuss what to do with the information. They decide to tell Miguel Ganon (Miguel Sandoval), the US Secretary of State, about this. But then, in classic Hal fashion, Hal goes off the rails and calls the President instead.

The show skips over the phone conversation between Hal and the President and instead cuts to what he says on the phone to Kate.

Keep in mind that at this point, Kate had just finished a tense conversation with the Vice President, during which she confirmed that she was coming for work.

“Kate,” Hal says, saddened. “I haven’t spoken to Ganon. I talked to the president.”

Sighing, he says, “Kate, he’s really upset.”

“What does it mean?” – Kate asks.

Next thing you know, a group of Secret Service agents are running towards Grace and Kate.

“He died, Katie. The President is dead. Grace Penn is president,” he says.

The last shot shows Grace looking at the Secret Service agents.

Reflecting on the turn of events, Sewell says, “I love the fact that this is happening. I know it seems a little dark, but it’s just dramatic.”

What does Hal say on the phone to the President?

Sewell says more details about this conversation will be revealed next season.

“I have to explain to people what happened. Why were you talking to him? What were you talking about? You know, there’s not much I can say,” he says.

Sewell understands Hal’s decision to go against the grain and call the President instead of the Secretary of State; this was his original plan.

“The only way to completely control the outcome is to tell the president directly. By going through someone else, they could use it to their advantage and use the trick against them,” he says.

According to Sewell, his intentions were correct: this was to be another Hal Wyler special.

“The fact is that he is famous and notorious for performing feats that no one else would have the courage or intelligence to do.” he says.

Hal, he says, is always aware of the risks and moves forward anyway.

“Sometimes casualties happen. What we do is for the whole world and will benefit countless people. But sometimes, if something goes wrong, there can be bad results. It’s one of those things. He was right to do this, right? Who was supposed to know that this could happen?

What will happen to Kate’s bid for vice president – and is The Diplomat headed to Washington?

Kate has been mulling over the vice-president position all season. In the wake of her husband’s financial scandal, Grace’s time as vice president is in jeopardy, leaving Kate with room to maneuver – if only she dared.

Given her tense history with Grace Penn, Kate may not be Grace’s best choice for the role. (According to 25th Amendment of the Constitutionthe new president may appoint a vice president of his choice).

However, Sewell says the show’s story is “slightly split in half”, so the cast will spend time in London and New York and be “between places”.

However, he makes no promises about how Kate’s story or career will develop in light of the new assignment. Of course, the Wylers will be on Grace’s radar—they know her biggest secret.

“There will always be something of Washington in this—I don’t know how it will end up,” he says.

Grace Penn is now president, which Sewell takes as good news for himself, even if it poses challenges for his character.

“It’s so exciting because you think, ‘Oh great, we’ll get to work with Alison again,'” he says.

“I love anything that brings new challenges, and not just challenges in the dramatic sense, but things that change balance and billing and relationships in ways that you have to navigate. For me and Keri, I think we’re similar in that we want the opposite of what you want in life. You want trouble. You want things to go wrong,” he says.
