Grandpa’s surprise Suno

David Outten

I worked for Movieguide® for many years.

I loved writing songs. I even wrote scripts and songs for musicals. I couldn’t find people willing to sing my songs. I paid online to sing and was not happy with the result. I even published a whole collection of texts and poems called Poems from the heart. It can be frustrating to feel left out when you think you’ve written something good.

Then Suno appeared.

Suno is a website powered by artificial intelligence. You can paste in lyrics, add some code like (verse), (bridge) and (chorus), give your work a title, select style tips, and you’ll have two versions of your song. You can change your selection and create two more songs. You can create pop, country, folk and many other styles. You can specify whether you want a male or female singer.

WARNING: This is addictive. The results are amazing.

I presented one song called I’m all yours about humility before God. I was concerned that it might be too repetitive. The first version I got was kind of country and I didn’t like it. I listened to the third forty times. I liked it. Suno spoke in a very gentle sweet voice accompanied by calm music. It really gave the feeling I wanted.

Another song I asked Suno to sing was called One nation under God. It was one I wrote for a movie called American dream. I tried so hard to get people interested in making the film, but to no avail. I even contacted some famous singers to see if they liked the song. At Suno I asked for a “pop” version. What I received stunned me. I wondered if God was playing a joke on me. I liked it. It sounded very much like the famous singer, I would really like to sing this song. You may think so too.

Another pleasant surprise from Suno was the love song I wrote for my wife. It’s called love you forever. We’ve been married 51 years. How often do you hear love songs from your grandparents? The irony is that my favorite music is film soundtracks (John Barry, Ennio Morricone, John Williams, etc.). I NEVER listen to country music, so what did Suno give me? is a country love song about old people. I really like it.

I currently have about 50 songs on davidoutten.com.

I have friends who are passionate about the future of blockchain technology. If you put a song on Spotify and you’re not affiliated with a major label, it’s like sticking a needle in a haystack and hoping it hits the top of the charts. Spotify is not a get-rich-scheme for grandpas who write love songs.

Instead, I found a service called tune.tv. It’s got millions of dollars in backing, but it’s really a startup looking to cut out the middlemen from the connection between creators and listeners. The creators get 90 percent of the revenue, and Tunes.tv gets ten. Newcomers can even pay listeners to view their songs and increase interest. Transactions are carried out automatically and are paid for in cryptocurrency tokens, which can be exchanged for cash.

Spotify is currently promoting content that will give them a higher share of revenue. He has an incentive to do it. Tune.tv receives the same ten percent regardless of the song. Payouts are based on seconds played.

I don’t plan to get rich from this service, but I do like the transparency and deal offered. The service is likely to grow rapidly if some famous singers offer their work exclusively on the new service. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone makes a deal when Spotify cuts their revenue.

Then I tried the AI video service. I took a photo of my daughter and asked the service to have her sing one of my songs. I gave him the audio file. She sang a few seconds of the song. It was a little creepy. It really looked like she was singing it. I even asked her dog to sing it – VERY creepy, but this technology is coming towards us like a tsunami. Soon I might have Abraham Lincoln sing a whole song. I have film music scripts waiting to be made into films. Just like my songs, I failed to get people interested in my musicals. One day you might see a movie called American dream made by me and no one but AI. You can listen to some of the songs from the film at davidoutten.com.

I once attended one of Ted Baer’s classes on How to Succeed in Hollywood (Without Losing Your Soul). I met a young man in class and became a good friend. I shared the movie script with him just to see what he thought about it. He bought the script from me, made the film, and now it has almost 9 million views on YouTube. It’s called I think.

I would certainly recommend Ted’s courses to anyone who wants to make films.

I would recommend Suno to anyone who has song lyrics they would like to hear performed.
