Angel City finished the regular season on the road against the Portland Thorns.

Becky Tweed took over as interim coach last season and led Angel City FC to the playoffs for the first time in the team’s short history.

Its first full season will conclude Friday night when the City of Angels visit the Portland Thorns. It was a learning experience.

“Honestly, I think I need to take a little more time and use this offseason to really reflect,” she said Thursday. “The first thing that comes to mind is that in this league it’s all about detail, discipline and one-percent moments.

“When I look back, I had already started to take a deep dive into the goals we conceded and the goals we scored and why it happened and when it happened. Those things are really, really important, and I think being able to incorporate those things into training and make the practice harder than the game is really important. I think as a coach you strive to have practices that you walk away from and everyone says the practices were so great, but actually when you show up to the game it’s not what the game looks like.”

Angel City (7-12-6, 24 points) will miss the playoffs for the second of three seasons. There could be a roster overhaul after this season, with nine players becoming unrestricted free agents, including Christen Press, Claire Emslie and starting goalie DeeDee Haracic.

Forward Messiah Bright, who arrived in an offseason trade with the Orlando Pride, has a bright future ahead of him.

“It’s definitely been a growing season, not only for me, but for my teammates,” she said. “I think every team has its problems and we are a very young group. This wasn’t the season we were looking forward to, but that’s what happens as things progress.

“We are very happy that we are still united as one and go through the phase of playing for each other, getting to know and explore ourselves and who we are in terms of our identity. We will be ready to come back stronger next season.”

This will be the first offseason under control new majority owners Willow Bay and Bob Iger. There is no college draft to build a roster this season, and President Julie Urman and General Manager Angela Hucles Mangano currently suspended NWSL due to a salary cap violation.

Tweed pointed to the success and development of Pride as a goal. Orlando won the NWSL Shield as the top regular-season team after missing the playoffs the past three seasons.
