Sutherlin woman rescued after spending night in wilderness picking mushrooms

A 43-year-old Sutherlin woman was rescued from the wilderness near Reedsport.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Mandy Greer was picking mushrooms Tuesday afternoon in the area of Camp Creek Road east of Loon Lake. She and her significant other only planned to be gone for a few hours.

Shortly before 5:00 pm on Tuesday, October 29, 911 dispatchers received a call from her companion saying they had become separated while picking mushrooms and Greer had not returned to their shared vehicle as planned.

Deputies and search and rescue responded and spent several hours searching for Greer in response to the report. Search efforts included ground planes, fixed-wing aircraft and drones. The drone operator detected potential heat signatures, but searchers did not locate Greer. Work was suspended early this morning but resumed Wednesday morning.

On Wednesday, Douglas County Search and Rescue received resources from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Unit to assist in the search effort, which resumed at 7 a.m.

At approximately 9:15 a.m., the deputy was able to make voice contact with Greer, who responded to the sound of the deputy’s siren. Searchers learned that Greer was injured and would need help getting out of the woods. When rescuers found her, they found that she had suffered a non-life-threatening injury and was cold and wet.

Rescuers provided first aid, food and hot tea before helping Greer to the roadway, where she was released into the care of emergency personnel.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Douglas County Search and Rescue, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue, Oregon State Police Aviation Unit, Sutherlin Police and Umpqua Valley Ambulance.
