Latest floods in Spain: More than 150 people killed in devastation as rescuers search for missing bodies

Rescuers continue to search for bodies in stranded cars and buildings after flooding in Spain.

The floods have killed at least 158 people, with 155 deaths confirmed in the eastern region of Valencia alone.

But an unknown number of people are still missing and more victims may be found.

“Unfortunately, there are dead people in some vehicles,” Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente said.

While the greatest suffering was caused in areas near the city of Valencia, the storms also unleashed their fury on large swathes of the southern and eastern coasts of the Iberian Peninsula.

Two deaths were confirmed in the neighboring region of Castilla-La Mancha and one in southern Andalusia.

Spain suffered nearly two years of drought, meaning that when the floods occurred, the ground was so hard that it could not absorb the rain, leading to flash floods.

The abnormal weather phenomenon surprised representatives of regional authorities.

And Spain’s National Meteorological Service said more rain fell in eight hours in the Valencian town of Chiva than in the previous 20 months.
