Kamala Harris to Spend Election Night at Howard University

Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, will host election night at her alma mater, Howard University, next Tuesday, a university spokesperson confirmed in an email. Inside Higher Education.

The Harris-Waltz campaign will hold an event on campus as votes come in. Classes will be held remotely on Monday and canceled on Tuesday to encourage student voting. in accordance with HilltopHoward’s student newspaper. The campus will be closed to the public on Tuesday.

The historically black university in Washington, D.C., has been a key part of Harris’ candidacy since she announced she would replace President Biden on the ticket in July. Her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha, has mobilized graduates to campaign for her, and she held a debate prep session there in August ahead of a debate against Republican nominee Donald Trump. When she announced her Democratic nomination in 2019, she did so for Howard.

Harris’ alma mater has long occupied special place in her life— and the story of her path to vice president. In her memoir, she wrote in Howard: “You don’t have to be put into a box of another person’s choosing.”

“At Howard,” she wrote, “you could come as you were and leave as you aspired to be.”

She could leave campus Tuesday night as the first HBCU alumna to be elected president of the United States.
