Why can’t this half-century-old Reaganist vote for Trump?

Why can’t this half-century-old Reaganist vote for Trump?

With so many Trump fans repeating the silly line that “Never Trump” conservatives are just unhappy with “mean tweets,” a brief explanation is needed. Not all anti-Trumpist Reaganites will cite the same reasons with the same emphasis, but after probably thousands of conversations on this topic over the past nine years, the summary below seems representative.

To begin with, three threshold considerations make it impossible to support Trump even if all other assessments were in his favor (which they are not). First, many of us have come to the conclusion that Trump is blatant bigot in several ways. This column is not the place to convince readers of such an assessment, but only to say that If that’s someone’s assessment, and if someone feels ethically obligated to never vote for a blatant bigot, well, that means Trump is out.

The second and third threshold disqualifiers are two versions of the same imperative. Some of us believe that the Senate should have responded to both Trump impeachments by finding him guilty, removing him from office, and disqualify him for life from any federal department.

If Barack Obama had suspended legally required arms sales to a foreign government while simultaneously pressuring that government to bring criminal charges against, say, a member of the Bush family, even after Obama’s own Justice Department said there were no grounds for prosecution – or if President Joe Biden did the same to, say, Ivanka Trump—almost every conservative in the country would have was demanding Senate conviction. Likewise, if any Democrat tried to overturn a legitimate election and inspired a mob to invade the Capitol to block the certification of the election: I wouldn’t want permanent disqualification.

In any case, there is a basic and almost irrefutable logic and ethics here: If If one believes that an official should have been found guilty of impeachable offenses requiring lifetime removal from office, then of course one should not support the official in office. And if this logic is true once, it is certainly doubly true for two separate instances of a disqualifying violation. “Disqualification” means, yes, “disqualification.”

The next consideration is almost as decisive as the first three. If If one believes, as many voters do, that the fate of Ukraine matters enormously to geopolitical peace and stability, then the Trump-Vance ticket is disgusting. Donald Trump is skeptical at best about the Ukraine case, while vice presidential candidate Senator J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) is extremely hostile towards him. Indeed, among staunch supporters of Ukraine, Vance has become almost irrevocably disgusting.

In addition to these four main reasons to oppose Donald Trump, some of us also think poorly of most of his policies, both past and future, as well as his competence – not to mention, of course, his complete defamatory personal behavior that includes, but is unlikely to be defined by, “rude tweets.”

Because this is an online publication, and to avoid redundancy and undue verbosity, I will take advantage of the web links to provide a variety of (my own, previously) explanations for these policy and competency assessments.

For example: His future economic management May be catastrophicwith a particularly reckless attitude towards national debt and against benefit reform. And his promises or threats regarding civil liberties during his second term almost frightening.

Meanwhile, although there is disagreement among Reaganite conservatives on this issue, some of us believe that his first term was cruel on almost every level. Even on his signature issues Because of border control in general, the trade deficit, the border wall, and industrial production, Donald Trump was a failure as president. He also oversaw more spending and debt than any president in U.S. history who did not fight in the war. And in foreign policy he has failed miserably, to the great detriment of this nation, in Syria and Venezuelawhile preparing his successor for the fiasco (which Biden has worsened) in Afghanistan by committing to a decisive, complete troop withdrawal while releasing 5,000 vicious Taliban members from prison without receiving anything of any real value in return.

Combine that with his weak support for NATO, his suck-up to dictators and his excruciatingly pathetic claim that he “fell in love” with murderous North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un – to no avail as North Korea’s nuclear ambitions have not been slowed. in general – and Donald Trump’s presidency turns out to be a fiasco.

Finally, some of us believe that the degradation of Donald Trump political moresabout which entire volumes will be written for decades will have a long-term negative impact on American public opinion.

All of this combines to make Donald Trump insufferable and insufferable. Now and forever.
