Six Triple Eights: The True Story of Tyler Perry’s New Netflix Film

For decades, stories of American women during World War II and their contributions to the war effort have been united by one image: the image of a woman in overalls. Rosie the Riveter which is invariably white. Meanwhile, the influence of women of color—and especially Black women on the same factory and shipyard lines—often minimized or ignored.

This is also true for the stories of conscripts. During World War II almost 350,000 womenapproximately 6,500 of whom were black served in all five branches of the US military. Many went abroad and about 432 people died. However, their stories rarely receive as much airtime as more popular (and literal) illustration of a 1940s girl boss.

Tyler Perry’s new Netflix movie helps set the record straight on both counts. It will premiere in select theaters and on Netflix this December. Six triple eights The film is inspired by the true story of the 6888th Central Postal Service Battalion, a predominantly black female unit led by Major Charity Adams Early (played by Kerry Washington).

Together, the 855 women of color who made up the 6888th took on the critical task of restoring morale at a critical moment in the war. How? Eliminating years of mail delays – think 17 million undelivered letters and parcels – this did not reach the American soldiers at the front. Quickly mastering the herculean task, the women successfully completed their mission in half the allotted time, despite poor working and living conditions exacerbated by discrimination.

No matter how quickly the 6888th helped the Allied powers win World War II, society was much slower to accept them. It wasn’t until March 2022—almost 80 years after the battalion’s mission—that President Joe Biden signed PL 117-97or the Six Triple Eight Congressional Gold Medal Act of 2021. This made the 6888th the only female military unit receive the highest civilian honor in the United States.
