A traveling exhibit on Holocaust remembrance will open at the Athens-Clarke County Library in November.

The Athens-Clarke County Library is one of 50 libraries in the United States that will host a traveling exhibit, “The Americans and the Holocaust,” opening in Athens on November 7 and running through December 19.

The exhibition is provided by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the American Library Association and explores the pressures and fears that shaped the American response to Nazism and genocide in Europe during the 1930s and 1940s.

The Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. is a memorial to the victims designed to provide lasting remembrance and understanding of the tragedy.

Retail premises: UGA and the Baptist Mission Board agree to a land swap that will lead to downtown development.

The library also announced a series of events dedicated to the exhibition.

  • A Kristallnacht memorial event is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on November 10. The program marks the 86th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the name given to the time when Nazi leaders carried out a pogrom against the Jewish people. There will also be a story about those times, presented by a Holocaust survivor.

  • The screening of the film “Casablanca” will take place on November 14 at 18:00. Starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, the film is set in 1940s Morocco. After the film, Elsa Durusau will talk about the film’s impact on Americans’ perception of World War II.

  • A special “Teen Tour” is scheduled for 4 p.m. on November 14, during which teens will be invited to a special exhibition recorded by artist Inky Brittany and hosted by the University of Georgia’s Department of Philosophy.

  • Author Frank W. Baker will share his book We Survived the Holocaust at 6:00 pm on November 18th. The book is the story of two young Polish Jewish survivors of the Holocaust. The conversation is followed by a reception.

  • Authors Randy Hershaft and Anne Cooper will talk about their book “Newshow in Berlin: The Associated Press and Nazi Germany” at 6 p.m. Nov. 19. The event can also be watched remotely.

  • The screening of the film “From Swastikas to Jim Crow” will take place on December 8 at 15:00. The 2000 documentary tells the story of Jewish refugee scholars who taught at historically black colleges in America before and during World War II.
