Former Seattle Mariners All-Star hits free agency, will need a new team in 2025

Former Seattle Mariners first baseman Ty France will need a new team in 2025. He was selected as a free agent after being picked off by the Cincinnati Reds.

The following is taken from MLSTradeRumors, which includes some information about France’s contract structure:

He would be eligible for arbitration and would be designed by MLBTR member Matt Schwartz earn $8.6 million in his final season managing the club. Today’s direct and subsequent free agent picks are effectively non-tenders.

Given the upcoming financial commitments, it is understandable why the Reds want to leave France.

The 30-year-old Frenchman was appointed by the Mariners back in July before signing with the Reds. He hit just .223 for Seattle with eight home runs. However, he has been a valuable member of the organization for several years since being acquired in a trade in 2020. He helped Seattle end its drought in 2022 and was an All-Star that season. He was a lifelong .266 hitter with an M.

He performed better for the Reds in the final 52 games of the season. He hit .251 with five homers and 20 RBIs, perhaps taking advantage of an easier travel schedule and a more hitter-friendly stadium. The Reds missed the playoffs, as did the Mariners.

Given his age and previous track record, France should have no problem finding an opportunity this offseason, although it remains to be seen whether he will have to settle for a minor league contract or not.

Sailors the plan at first base is unclear at this time. Luke Raley is capable of playing this position, although he will likely need a platoon mate.
