How to get to the polling stations on Election Day for free by bus

DUBUQUE, Iowa (KCRG) – Cedar Rapids, Dubuque and Iowa City are offering free bus rides to voters on Election Day, November 5th.

“We just want people to be able to vote,” Dubuque Transportation Director Ryan Knuckey said.

The Giulia public transport system offers free service “Train to Vote” from 6:15 to 18:45 on election day. Buses will not deviate from their regular routes, but drivers will make additional stops closer to polling stations throughout the city.

“We don’t think transportation should be a barrier,” Nucky explained. “We want (voters) to be able to get to the polls, exercise their rights to vote as Americans, and by doing this, by making it free, we’ll see an increase (in ridership), which is great, but it’s a service the city can provide to its residents.”

Dubuque also offers on-demand ADA Paratransit service for passengers with disabilities and elderly passengers, which will also be free for voters who register before Election Day.

Cedar Rapids Transit will provide free rides to voters on November 5th. Information on how to plan a specific route can be found on the website cedar-rapids.org/transit.

All bus rides in Iowa City are free after Iowa City Transit was introduced two-year pilot program offering free travel to all passengers. This is a program funded by federal COVID-19 relief money. Route information can be found on the website icgov.org/transit.

Normal fare prices remain at Metropolitan Transit Authority.
