It was another day where I solved the purple problem relatively early – and it’s a good thing I did because the likelihood of me solving the blue problem was only slightly above zero. This is because the blue color was BASIC EXERCISES including BOAT, CRUNCH, ALIEN and PLANK, a subject I know next to nothing about and have absolutely no interest in. I know what CRUNCH and PLANK are and assumed that one answer might involve those exercises, but had no idea what the other two would be, and even when I saw them, I still had no idea what BOAT was. or ALPION actually includes.

Regarding the latter, I initially thought it might fit in with CHANDELIER as part of the “things that hang” group, but I was on the wrong track. Instead, CHANDELIER teamed up with HOOP, DROP and STUD to form a purple group, EARRING TYPES, which I had fun figuring out.

Yellow and green were theoretically simpler, as you’d expect, but it took me a while to separate them. I figured SEEING IN THE KITCHEN would be one of them, but besides TABLE, FRIDGE, STOVE, SINK – possible answers – I might include CABINET, so waited until I decided on a few more before tackling this. My patience paid off and I completed the Connections challenge today without any errors (this time).

What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. You’ll find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow is a little harder, blue is often quite hard, and purple is usually very hard.

On the other hand, you technically don’t need to solve the last question since you can answer it by process of elimination. Moreover, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you some breathing room.

It’s a bit more complex than something like Wordle, however, and the game has plenty of opportunities to confuse you with tricks. For example, beware of homophones and other word games that can disguise answers.
