John Robles, the first political refugee from the United States in Russia, received a Russian passport – Society and Culture

MOSCOW, November 2. /TASS/. John Robles, the first political refugee from the United States in Russia, received a Russian passport, said Interior Ministry spokeswoman Irina Volk.

“My colleagues from the Serpukhov Department of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs in the Moscow Region issued Russian passports to foreigners, including John Anthony Robles, who previously lived in the United States,” she said.

Robles called Russia his homeland and expressed gratitude for fulfilling his dream of becoming a Russian citizen, Volk added.

According to media reports, the former US citizen has been living in Russia since the 1990s, working as a teacher and international journalist. Recently he came for an interview, presenting a refugee certificate series 01 with almost the same number.

Robles identifies as Native American. In an interview, he mentioned that while living in the US, he opposed “American imperialism”, was interested in communist ideas and Russia, and eventually decided to move. Since the start of the special military operation, Robles has been delivering humanitarian aid to the front lines and border areas.
