Forget Photoshop – Midjourney has just released an updated image editor with an amazing new feature.

Middle of the road announced that its image editor extension is being rolled out to a select group of users. The extension allows users to edit external images inside Middle of the road for the first time, albeit with stricter moderation and privacy protections.

This takes Midjourney’s tool beyond simple generative AI image editing and puts it even further at odds with Midjourney’s tools. best photo editing software such as Photoshop or Affinity.

It’s ironic because companies like Adobe have been busy implementing a variety of artificial intelligence tools into your legacy software such as Photoshop or Lightroom. In addition to the ability to edit external images, Midjourney now also allows you to change the textures of materials, surfaces and lighting inside the editor.

How does this work in practice? For example, you can upload an image of a living room, and then Midjourney can add or remove elements, change the texture or color of the walls, and even adjust the lighting to make the image appear as if it was taken at night.

Midjourney has warned that external image editing will only be available to those with an annual subscription, members who have been subscribers in the last 12 months, and members with at least 10,000 images. This feature is also only available in Midjourney 6.1.

“This is a completely new phenomenon, so we want to give the community, our human moderators, our next-gen AI moderation systems, and heck, our server clusters, time to sort this out carefully,” the company wrote in its post. Discord community and on X.

Midjourney’s expansion into external images is not limited to just images. Users can upload sketches or hand-drawn drawings and then use AI to turn them into full-fledged works of art.

And while professional graphic designers and artists may still want to use traditional tools for precise editing, Midjourney’s efforts cover most of the bases. As we wrote earlier, any new additions organically fit into the style and shape of the existing image. Additionally, the new user interface is very responsive, making the overall image creation process more similar to a Photoshop-style application.
