The crazy 15 minutes that cost England victory over the All Blacks – explained

Yellow card gives England a chance

78th minute: England 22 New Zealand 24
Steve Borthwick replaces Ollie Lawrence with Nick Ishikwe, sending Ben Earl into the centre. Ford’s short restart is played out by Freeman and Theo Dan in pursuit. The hooker earns the win and then lights up England for the second time despite being hit high by Anton Lienert-Brown.

Play continues and Ford takes the penalty, sending the dummy towards Fahey-Waboso, who is tapped away by Lienert-Brown. Gardner received a yellow card. After a long pause in Dan’s treatment, Jonker again warns Gardner about Lienert-Brown’s previous attack on Dan. As a result, Lienert-Brown will remain with a yellow card and the penalty will be awarded where he blocked Fahey-Waboso.

Ford makes a tee call and hits the right post, but England have one last chance. After a shot on goal, Henry Slade tackled Patrick Tuipulota, resulting in the ball being cleared out of play. The home team kicked out from 10 meters.

Failed to drop target

79th minute: England 22 New Zealand 24
Tosi breaks through Baxter and Jamie George, the latter returning for Dan and Randall having to run away from a retreating setpiece. Tuipulotu beats Ford with a vertical tackle on the 22 and zig-zags England for several stages. As they cross the 22 again, Ford drops into the pocket, but with Roigard, the closest defender to him, rushing up, he directs his attempt to score to the right of the post.

Matt Dawson, who made the final pass in Jonny Wilkinson’s historic strike in 2003, believes accuracy has deserted the England team. “It was complete chaos,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live. “All it took was coolness on the part of George Ford, but you can’t blame him. It was a terrible pass under pressure (from Randall).”
