Real Madrid legend Marcelo has had his contract with Fluminense terminated after he clashed with his coach Mano Menezes on the sidelines.

Fluminense, for whom the five-time Champions League winner played in his native Brazil, drew 2-2 at Gremio in the league match on Saturday.

Marcelo, now 36, was named as a substitute for his boyhood team and was preparing to take the field in the second half and was seen receiving instructions from Menezes as the duo waited for the optimal time to make the substitution.

However, in a turn of events, Marcelo could be seen shaking his head at the instruction, leading to Menezes pushing his defender back and questioning the response.

Marcelo shook his head again as Menezes pushed him back to the bench despite the player’s protests.

Instead, another player, John Kennedy, entered the field, and the hosts tried to finish the game.

The cameras then show Marcelo sitting on the bench putting on his bib and there is confusion as the board shows the wrong number.

To make matters worse for Fluminense, they conceded a penalty in the 99th minute of stoppage time, with Reynaldo Manoel da Silva scoring from the spot to give his side a 2–2 draw.

Shortly after the strange incident, the Brazilian giants confirmed that Marcelo’s contract had been terminated.

A club statement read: “Fluminense and Marcelo Vieira announce the termination of their contract by mutual consent of the parties.

They added: “The institutional and emotional ties between Fluminense and Marcelo continue to be maintained. Recently, the athlete’s name was immortalized at the stadium of the Herem training center. “Fluminense thanks Marcelo and, as always, will continue to support his success in all his challenges.”

Former Middlesbrough and Barcelona striker Martin Branthwaite opened the scoring for Gremio before John Arias and Kaua Elias turned the game around.

After a last-minute equalizer, Felipe Melo was sent off for Fluminense.

Now it remains to be seen what Marcelo’s future holds at the club he has been playing for since 2023.

After leaving Madrid after winning the Champions League as captain in 2022, he briefly joined Olympiacos before moving to his homeland.

Fluminense said it would “continue, as always, to support his success in all his challenges.”

“I was going to release Marcelo at that moment, but I heard something I didn’t like and changed my mind,” Menezes, who has been in charge of the club since early July. “I put John Kennedy on the wing – he is a strong player who offers an outlet.

“We always had an outlet. I don’t believe that with his arrival the team would have problems. It’s not easy to take the field at this stage of the match. He did not come to solve any problem; he came to save what we had. There were two or three minutes left.

“When you go out, you go out to close the game, you can’t avoid it. So when you bring a player onto the field in the final minutes, you tell him he has to finish the match. The player knows this. But we will solve this within the country.”
