PHOENIX — No major Arizona cities ranked in the top 25 in a recent study of the safest places to live in the United States.

WalletHub ranking “America’s Safest Cities (2024)” compared 182 cities based on 41 key safety indicators, focusing on home and community, disaster risk, and financial security.

Gilbert took the highest position (31st), while Phoenix finished in a dismal 149th place. Scottsdale came in second (ranked 39th), while Chandler (ranked 46th), Peoria (ranked 69th), Mesa (ranked 85th) and Tempe (ranked 92nd) also ranked in the top 100.

South Burlington, Virginia, Casper, Wyoming, and Warwick, Rhode Island were ranked among the top three safest cities in the United States. South Burlington was the only city to rank in the top 10 in all three major categories, specifically ranking first for financial security.

How the study was conducted

Each eligible U.S. city received up to 100 points in three main categories. Home and community safety had the highest weight and were scored up to 60 points, while disaster risk and financial security were scored up to 20 points each.

Some subcategories included sex offenders per capita, drug poisoning deaths per capita, wildfire risk index, unemployment rate, and debt-to-income ratio.

Gilbert (65.33 points), nearly six points behind South Burlington (74.15), ranked seventh in home and community safety. This was in stark contrast to Phoenix (50.83), which ranked 136th in its category.

None of the Arizona cities represented (nine) were able to rank in the top 140 for natural disaster risk, with the exception of Tucson, which was 27th in that category and 146th overall.

On the other hand, financial security has been a bright spot for Arizona cities. Six eclipsed the top 50 (Scottsdale led the way in 21st place) and three others finished in the top 80.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Detroit, Michigan, and Memphis, Tennessee, were ranked the least safe American cities, and none scored enough to rank in the top 100 in any major category.
