The second day of the Breeders’ Cup featured nine races, starting with the Philly and Marais Sprint and ending with the Dirt Mile. Meanwhile, the crown jewel of the Breeders’ Cup, the Classic, went ahead with a $7 million purse.

This year’s Breeders’ Cup was held at Del Mar Race Course in Del Mar, California. A total of $34 million will be paid out in purses and rewards over the two days of the event.

Here’s a look at the day’s results, purses, payouts and highlights.

Filly & Mare Sprint ($1 million purse)

1. Angel Soul ($520,000 Prize Share): Win ($41.60), Place ($9.80), Show ($8.40).

2. Society ($170,000): Venue ($5.80), Show ($4.20).

3. Nice ($90,000): Show ($8.20).

Angel Soul, 12-1, took the win after attacking from outside. She narrowly beat Society, who held the lead on the inside fence for almost the entire backstretch before a furious finish from Angel Soul.

Sprint on the lawn ($1 million purse)

1. Starlust ($520,000 Share of Purse): Win ($69.20), Place ($27.20), Show ($14.60).

2. Motorious ($170,000): Place ($11), Show ($7.20).

3. Ag Bullet ($90,000): Show ($6.80)

Ross’s jockey Ryan had the ride of a lifetime here, guiding the 30-1 Starlust to victory, splitting the horse between the two over the course and emerging victorious. Ryan later called it a “perfect discovery” in a post-race interview with Carlos Morales.

An investigation followed, but the result stood.

Which star has Rossa Ryan, one of Europe’s best young jockeys, retained? #Starlust calm at the beginning and conveyed it perfectly. A brilliantly timed run to take #TurfSprint. The investigation continues, let’s hope the result remains valid.

Spinning Wheel ($2 million purse)

1. Torpedo Anna ($1,040,000 share of purse): win ($2.80), place ($2.40), show ($2.10).

2. Raging Sea ($340,000): Place ($3.00), Show ($2.40).

3. Candied ($180,000): Show ($2.80)

Torpedo Anna left no doubt about the winner of this race, controlling it all the way and holding off Raging Sea the entire way for a comfortable win. It marked another victory in a phenomenal year for Torpedo Anna, who won six of seven events, including the Kentucky Oaks and Travers Stakes.

1. Rebel’s Romance ($2.6 million share): win ($5.80), place ($4.40), show ($3.20).

2. Rowsham Park ($850,000): Venue ($15.60), Show ($11.60).

3. Shahryar ($450,000): Show ($4.80)

Rebel’s Romance were in the lead going into the finish and held a comfortable lead in the closing moments before Rowsham Park tried to steal victory before the finish. In the end, Rebel’s Romance did just enough to win, winning the competition for the second time in three years.

Classic: ($7 million purse)

1. Sierra Leone ($3,640,000 purse share): win ($15.80), place ($5.60), show ($3.60).

2. Cruelty ($1,190,000): Place ($4.40), Show ($3.20).

3. Forever Young ($630,000): Show ($3.60)

At 40-1, Derma Sotogake led for most of the race before 5-2 favorite Fierceness took over. But Sierra Leone, 6-1, attacked powerfully from the outside to defeat Fierkness by a wide margin. It was a sensational race for Sierra Leone, who finished second in this year’s Kentucky Derby.

Filly & Mare Turf ($2 million purse)

1. Moira ($1,040,000 Share of Purse): Win ($13.60), Place ($5.80), Show ($4.20).

2. Cinderella’s Dream ($340,000): Location ($4.60), Show ($3.40).

3. Didia ($180,000): Show ($7)

Moira rose from the outside on the backstretch, passing the full Count Felicia, to hold on for the win. Full Count Felicia led almost the entire race, but lost momentum throughout the stretch and eventually finished outside the top six. However, credit must be given to Moira at 5-1 for a sensational race and to jockey Flavien Prat, who won back-to-back races after riding to victory in Sierra Leone. Cinderella’s Dream, the pre-race favorite, finished second.

Sprint ($2 million purse)

1. Straight No Chaser ($1,040,000 Prize Share): Win ($14.20), Place ($7.60), Show ($5.00).

2. Bentornato ($340,000): Place ($23.80), Show ($12.60).

3. Mullikin ($180,000): Show ($3.60)

It was a fantastic two horse race between the 6-1 Straight No Chaser and the long running 25-1 Bentornato. Federal Judge led for most of the race but was beaten by the first two horses in a battle down the stretch. In the end, Straight No Chaser attacked strongly from the outside and won by almost one length.

1. More Than Looks ($1,040,000 Share of Purse): Win ($15.80), Place ($6.40), Show ($3.60).

2. Johannes ($340,000): Place ($5.20), Show ($3.60)

3. Mullikin ($180,000): Show ($2.80)

More Than Looks broke from the back of the pack to emerge victorious, narrowly ahead of Johannes. It was an incredible late strike for a 6-1 horse ridden by Jose Ortiz, who has done a fantastic job here.

Dirt Mile ($2 million purse)

1. Complete Serrano ($1,040,000 Share of Purse): Win ($28.80), Place ($12.40), Show ($7.40).

2. Post Time ($340,000): Location ($7.60), Show ($4.40).

3. Domestic Product ($180,000): Show ($3.20).

Post Time surged ahead, but Serrano, 15-1 Full, continued his lucrative move from Argentina to the United States, finishing strong to take victory in the final championship race of the night.
