Canada wants to show that India is becoming a threat to the Western-dominated order: foreign affairs expert Robinder Sachdev

Foreign affairs expert Robinder Sachdev said Canada’s latest actions are trying to show the West “that India is becoming a threat to our Western-dominated order.” Canada is “spouting global propaganda” to teach India a lesson, he added.

Speaking to ANI, Sachdev said, “India says Canadian intelligence is collecting information on Indian diplomats.”

India has accused Canada of “harassing and intimidating” its consulate staff, alleging they were subject to audio and video surveillance, which India said violated diplomatic norms.

During a media briefing on November 2, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India has lodged a formal protest with the Canadian government in response to reports that several Indian diplomats in Canada are under surveillance amid ongoing diplomatic tensions.

“I want to say that there is now a commission in Canada to investigate all these foreign influences and their intelligence failures. Canadian intelligence should be investigated to find out how they carry out these activities. The Canadian Parliament should know how its intelligence works…maybe there are some gaps…maybe some foreign powers have influenced the intelligence…,” Sachdev said.

The Justin Trudeau government has also called India a “cyber adversary” and added it to the list of hostile countries in the field of cybersecurity. India condemned the move, calling it an attempt to tarnish its international reputation.

The recently released National Cyber Threat Assessment 2025-26 study ranks India fifth after China, Russia, Iran and North Korea.

“It looks like Canada wants to teach India a lesson… they are spewing global propaganda against us… maybe they are trying to fight back against India and show the West, i.e. America and England, that India is becoming a threat to our Western dominated order ” added Sachdev.

Relations between India and Canada have deteriorated significantly since Prime Minister Trudeau’s September allegations regarding India’s potential involvement in the killing of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India has consistently raised concerns about Canada providing sanctuary to pro-Khalistan groups operating with impunity.

India responded by expelling six Canadian diplomats and recalling its High Commissioner Sanjay Verma along with other targeted officials after firmly rejecting Ottawa’s allegations.
