On the women’s side, Hellen Obiri of Kenya is the defending champion and will return to defend her title. Last year, Obiri won the New York Marathon and the Boston Marathon, and also won bronze at the Olympics.

Two legends of the sport, Thirunesh Dibaba and Vivian Cheruiyot, also compete in women’s sports. Dibaba has not finished a marathon since 2018, while Cheruiyot, 40, was third in the Paris Marathon this year. The two haven’t competed against each other since the 2018 London Marathon, which Cheruiyot won.
