New York marathon The winners of the men’s and women’s divisions will receive six-figure sums for beating their competitors in Sunday’s 26.2-mile race.

The top-place men’s and women’s runners in the “Open Division,” which includes only professional and invitational athletes, will take home $100,000 in prize money, according to the event. New York Road Runnersa non-profit organization that organizes an annual marathon.

Athletes finishing second in each division will earn $60,000. There are also payouts for men and women who finish in the top 10 in their categories, depending on the order in which they cross the finish line. Prize money for top finishers:

  • 3rd place: US$40,000
  • 4th place: US$25,000
  • 5th place: US$15,000
  • 6th place: US$10,000
  • 7th place: US$7500
  • 8th place: 5000 US dollars
  • 9th place: US$2500
  • 10th place: 2000 US dollars

Additional awards of $50,000 are given to runners who break existing course records.

Separately, the top American riders in both the men’s and women’s divisions will also receive cash bonuses in the following amounts:

  • 1st place: US$25,000
  • 2nd place: US$15,000
  • 3rd place: US$10,000
  • 4th place: 5000 US dollars
  • 5th place: 3000 US dollars

So-called “Masters” or professional runners aged 40 and over who compete in the “Open Division” are also entitled to prize money based on their performance.

First and second place runners earn $3,000; Third place runners receive $1,000 each.

Professional wheelchair athletes also take home money if they finish in the top six in their division. The first-place athletes in the wheelchair category receive $35,000 each and are eligible for a $50,000 bonus if they break the course record.

In addition to monetary rewards, the New York City Marathon raises millions of dollars each year from tens of thousands of runners who compete on behalf of charities in exchange for participating in the race.

Since 2006, the event has raised $520 million for charity, according to New York Road Runners.
