Police receive new sexual assault allegation against Alex Salmond

Following his trial in 2020, Salmond was cleared of serious sex offenses charges.

He was charged with 13 offences, including attempted rape, but was acquitted of all charges after two weeks of evidence at the High Court in Edinburgh.

The women who made allegations against Salmond, which date back to his time as First Minister, included a Scottish National Party politician, a party worker and several current and former civil servants and Scottish Government officials.

During his evidence in court, Salmond said claims about his alleged behavior were “deliberate fabrications for political purposes” or “exaggerations”.

Salmond’s lawyer told the court the former first minister “certainly could have been better” but had committed no crimes.

He said his client sometimes behaved badly, calling him “irritable.”

In two subsequent inquiries into the conduct of ministers and officials, Salmond said he was convinced that many members of his former party had conspired against him in an attempt to prevent his return to frontline politics.
