Steven Gerrard was subjected to cruel taunts from rival Saudi Arabia after his Al Ettifaq side suffered a 2-0 defeat on Saturday night.

The Liverpool legend is under pressure in the Middle East as his side struggle after suffering a fourth defeat in six games during his second season at the club.

Gerrard has been in charge of Al Ettifaq for 16 months and is reported to earn £15.2 million a year in Dammam while living abroad in Bahrain.

Al Ettifaq finished sixth in the 18-team Saudi Pro League last season but are now 11th after nine rounds of matches in the 2024-25 season.

After the game, Gerrard was booed by a large section of the home fans, who called for him to “go away”, and later suffered further misery when Al-Qadsia jeered him after their convincing victory.

The 44-year-old still regrets not winning the Premier League during his glory years at Liverpool, the closest he came to doing so when he captained the Reds in 2013/14.

However, horror struck when Gerrard missed against Chelsea on a fateful weekend at Anfield, Demba Ba fired home and the rest, as they say, is history: Liverpool were knocked out of the title race.

Gerrard himself has since revealed that memories of that terrible day still haunt him, with Al Qadsia poking fun at the moment as he celebrated his latest victory over Al Ettifaq on social media.

Following the win, the official X Club account posted a photo of the Al Ettifaqa player slipping in the game and shared a photo mocking Gerrard, saying: “Like father, like son.”

The club also captioned their post “same gaffe” as they seek to further add to the former England captain’s misery as he faces demands to resign from his post.

Speaking after the recent defeat, Gerrard said: “I’ve spoken to the players. If we had performed like this earlier, we would not have put ourselves in such an awkward situation, but I am responsible.
