I still remember getting my first physical card. It had a distinct pink cover and contained maps of the Peak District in the UK. Even though he is no longer there, he still holds a very dear place in my heart. Even to this day, I enjoy the process of unfolding the card and the pleasure of folding it in that predictable way that OS cards do.

I now have several other maps for different areas of the UK. Each one tells the story of the places I’ve visited and the people I’ve met. I know who I was vacationing with and what attractions I want to visit. Unfortunately, I haven’t bought a new map in a while, relying instead on digital maps and directions. I wonder if I lost anything in the process?

However, I am not the only one who has entered the digital age. It is now possible to access, as they are called here in the UK where I live, ‘Ordinance Review (OS) Maps’ via Native OS Maps app. It will take you on stunning routes and reveal a whole world of undiscovered treasures. I no longer need to rely on mastery of specific cards; now the whole world is at my fingertips. And yes, this applies to the United States.

Depending on how adventurous you are and what your personality is, you can either start by creating your own adventures or follow the adventures of others. Both are possible. I started by looking for trails that were closest to me. This helped me get my bearings and see if any of the routes looked familiar. I was disappointed that I didn’t see more trails near my area, but after zooming out, I quickly found some great options within a few miles of here.

Routes are clearly shown with a red line overlaid on the OS map. Route properties are presented for each route with detailed information including distance as well as total ascent and total descent. This helps you quickly determine if the route suits your capabilities or the amount of time available.

If you decide to drive a specific route, one of the most useful features at this point is Start Directions. Your favorite maps app will open and then you’ll be directed straight to the trailhead. OS Maps has it all covered.

If you need a little more time and information before making a decision, be sure to check out the Tabletop 3D feature. This is so great. Simply allow the app to access your camera before placing a flat surface under your smartphone’s camera lens. Click “Place Model” and you will see the route in front of you in 3D. You can then move and rotate it to see if you like the way it looks. Genius.

You’ll also want to read any reviews before you travel. User input is useful in determining the more human aspects of each route. Reviews also include star ratings so you can quickly see if others liked it.

Along the route, the app will provide amazing navigation tools so you never feel lost. This will help if you want to get off the beaten path. The activity recording feature also allows users to keep a log of their adventures for future reference. If you think others might like them, you can save them and share them with family or friends.

When you’re on the go, you have reason to worry about losing your mobile signal. This is the last thing you want when you’re planning your route for the first time or if you need to reschedule it. Luckily, you can download maps and directions to your phone so you can view them offline.

Your activities can also be synced across all your devices, including desktop, mobile and even Apple Watch. This app truly integrates into your electronic ecosystem, delivering next-level adventure.
