An American woman involved in the 1990 “killer clown” case has been released from prison.

An American woman involved in the 1990 “killer clown” case has been released from prison.

Keane-Warren was sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2023.

Her release was not unexpected: Florida law gave her early release credit for good behavior.

“Sheila Keene-Warren will always be recognized as a convicted murderer and will wear that stain every day for the rest of her life,” Palm Beach County District Attorney Dave Aronberg said in a statement Saturday to The Associated Press.

Keene-Warren agreed to the plea deal because she would be quickly released and could otherwise face life in prison if the case went to trial, Greg Rosenfeld, Keene-Warren’s lawyer, told The Associated Press.

“We are very pleased that Ms. Keene-Warren has been released from prison and is returning to her family,” Mr. Rosenfeld told the news outlet. “As we have stated from the beginning, she did not commit this crime.”

The victim’s son, Joseph Ahrens, told authorities the bell rang at the family home and his mother answered the door to a man dressed as a clown. The man handed her several balloons and then shot her in the face.

Authorities said Keane-Warren was having an affair with the victim’s husband, but it was only after improved DNA testing that investigators linked Keane-Warren to the crime.

In 2002, Keane-Warren married Michael Warren.
