Gary Neville reluctantly picked two players as he blasted Manchester United in their 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Old Trafford.

Sunday’s result means United have dropped 18 points from their first 10 Premier League matches this season and currently sit in 13th place.

The impasse was Ruud van Nistelrooy’s second game as United interim manager, coming six days after the sacking of former coach Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag becomes United’s fifth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson’s glorious 26-year reign ended in 2013.

Ruben Amorim will become sixth on November 11 and Neville, who spent his entire senior career with United during the Ferguson era, is desperate to see significant progress.

Reacting to his old team’s performance against Chelsea, the former right-back said: Gary Neville Podcast on Sunday night: “After 20 minutes you realized it was the same, same old. You can’t explain it. There have been five or six managers since Sir Alex Ferguson and we are talking about the same thing.

“At times Manchester United played like an underdog team. They were sitting on the edge of their own box, preparing for a counter-attack 70-80 yards up the pitch.”

Neville then turned his attention to Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho, who both started Sunday’s game as attacking players on the wings in United’s 4-2-3-1 formation.

“I’m not going to pull Rashford and Garnacho… but I am,” Neville continued. “Because these are two players who have come through the professional ranks. There’s some merit to that… the fact that you’re an academy player and because of that you get some support from the fans. That’s why there is enthusiasm for them. Obviously now Rashford has been with the team for a few years and Garnacho has been with the team for a couple of years or so.

“But when I watch (Bukayo) Saka, (Leandro) Trossard and (Gabriel) Martinelli (playing for Arsenal), and also when I watch Bernardo Silva and (Phil) Foden for Manchester City or I look at the players.” Liverpool”, I look at them. everyone is rushing back, harassing and huddling together with real intent.

“But I saw (Chelsea right-back Malo) Gusto running forward on that far side… we couldn’t believe how much space he had.

“The first ethic is to work hard. I’m not saying Garnacho and Rashford don’t work hard, but they can work harder. I know this. It’s their defensive work that I think rewards you in your attacking game.

“Most of the time I was at United I played with players like Andrei Kanchelskis, David Beckham and obviously Ryan Giggs. And the work they did without the ball meant that the rewards went to the team in possession.

“There is no doubt that the harder you work, the luckier you are and the more rewarding life brings you.

“They think they’re working hard, they think they’re doing their best. I understand that trust is low, they have lost their manager, the team is not in the best condition, I understand all that.

“I never had to suffer through all this at United and I don’t know what it’s like to play in this era. But we need to get back to the idea that essentially, on the field, you’re all in it together. And Garnacho and Rashford, I have to point to them today and say that I think they can do a lot more without the ball. And much more.

“I don’t care what they do with the ball. To be honest, I really don’t. I’m interested in whether you have the mindset to fight for the team throughout the match. And I’m not saying they played poorly today or anything like that. But I see other wing players in the league doing a lot more than them.

“They have no idea how to push. I think they need training again, like they need to restart the game and train this group of players again because they don’t look like they’ve ever faced each other.

“It’s really disappointing. Player after player came to United for 10 years – and coaches – and they couldn’t open the door, which is just the level of play.”

Garnacho played the full 90 minutes on Sunday, with Rashford being substituted in the 72nd minute. Garnacho touched the ball 42 times and recorded four shots, while Rashford had 37 touches and two shots.

Garnacho started on the right side of United's attack and played the full 90 minutes.

Neither player made a key pass to create a chance, nor did they make a single tackle or interception between them.

Despite United’s poor performance, the home side took the lead on Sunday when Bruno Fernandes converted a 70th-minute penalty after goalkeeper Robert Sanchez fouled Rasmus Hoylund.

But Chelsea equalized less than five minutes later when Moises Caicedo scored his first goal of the season.

Van Nistelrooy has two more games left as interim coach. The first will take place in the Europa League against FC Bodo/Glimt on Thursday evening. In three days, United will host Leicester in the Premier League.
