Around 11 a.m., police received a 911 call about a 15-year-old girl who was in critical condition, police said Friday. The girl was in the area of King Street East threatening to jump off the rocks along the St. Lawrence River.

Officers responded quickly and found her on the edge of a cliff along the embankment in West Fulford Place behind Fulford Manor.

“Officers began speaking with the woman in an attempt to convince her to get to safety,” police added.

Unfortunately, during these negotiations, the girl jumped off the edge of a cliff.

Luckily, the tree slowed her fall into the water by about 15 to 20 feet, police said.

“As soon as she jumped, officers quickly came down and entered the cold, shallow water to rescue her.”

The victim suffered only non-life-threatening injuries, but she refused to cooperate with police and had to be taken to a safe location.

The police took her to the hospital, where she was admitted to a psychiatric hospital.

“The quick response and actions of the officers should be commended, as well as the assistance and preparedness of the Brockville Fire Department and Leeds and Grenville Paramedics,” police said.

Police responded at about 1:15 a.m. to a complaint of intimate partner violence at a home on Orchard Street, police said later Friday.

Investigations revealed that the couple had an argument in the early hours of the morning, which escalated into a fight, police added.

“The man caused damage to the house by hitting and breaking a picture frame, held her down and choked her, preventing her from leaving, and took her phone to prevent her from calling the police. Once the argument subsided, she was able to leave and go to the police station for help,” police added.

Police later located and arrested a 61-year-old male suspect around 3:30 a.m.

He was detained at a bail hearing and charged with forcible confinement, overcoming resistance by strangulation and mischief under $5,000.

The victim received minor injuries that were not life-threatening.
