Races to Watch in Woodbury County

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – It’s Election Day and KTIV is taking a look at the Woodbury County race.

Listed below are some of the major races taking place in Woodbury County. They will be updated as results become available.

Woodbury County Auditor (4-year term)

Democrat Pat Gill and Republican Michelle Skaff are competing against each other in the race for Woodbury County Auditor.

The auditor attends board meetings, takes and records minutes of meetings, and conducts elections.

Gill served two terms in the Iowa House of Representatives from 1990 to 1994. Following this, Gill was elected county auditor in 1996 and is completing his seventh term in that position.

Skaff began her career in public service as a 911 operator in Story County for four years. She then worked for 11 years at the Woodbury County Communications Center as a 911 operator. In 2010, Skaff was hired by the Woodbury County Council, first as the director of the Regional Law Enforcement Intelligence Information Office, and then by the Emergency Management Commission as Woodbury County’s first official emergency management coordinator. In 2016, Skaff accepted the position of deputy auditor.

Woodbury County Supervisor – District 1 (4-year term)

Republican Kent Carper and Democrat John Herrig are facing each other in the race for Woodbury County Supervisor – District 1.

Woodbury County Board of Supervisors District 1 covers the northwesternmost portion of the county.

Carper is a 16-year veteran of the U.S. Army National Guard. He also has 32 years of experience as a nurse in the military and private sector.

Herrig is now retired after 18 years as a business representative for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW). He served as director of IAMAW District 6 and president of the Iowa Council of Machinists, the two highest positions in the state.

Woodbury County Supervisor – District 1

Woodbury County Supervisor – District 3 (4-year term)

Democrat Willard McNaughton and Republican Mark are vying against each other in the race for Woodbury County Supervisor – District 3.

Woodbury County Board of Supervisors District 3 covers the northern, central and eastern parts of the county, including Moville.

Nelson served on the Woodbury County Farm Bureau board for 10 years as treasurer and was president of the Woodbury County Cattlemen’s Association for 4 years.

Woodbury County Supervisor – District 3

Woodbury County Supervisor – District 5 (4-year term)

Republican David Dietrich and Democrat Lincoln Ryan are facing each other in the race for Woodbury County Supervisor – District 5.

Woodbury County Board of Supervisors District 5 covers the western and southern parts of the county, including Sloan and Otho.

Dietrich served 32 years in the Army with the 185th Air Refueling Wing as an F-16 mechanic and boom operator on the KC-135. He achieved the military rank of E-9, which is the highest enlisted rank achieved by only 1% of Air Force personnel.

Ryan has spent his entire career serving the community, but this is his first opportunity to become an elected official. He retired from active duty and reserve duty to serve in county and city positions. He has served on various non-profit organizations and boards serving the community.
